Fresh and Local – Farm to Table

It is August, and Farmer’s Market season is in full swing! When you sit down to a delicious meal do you ever think about where the food on your plate was grown? Or who picked that beautiful Red Delicious apple? Today, chefs and consumers alike are putting thought into the sourcing of their food; choosing to rely on the bounty of local farmers. Eating farm to table is more than just a culinary trend; it is a movement that fosters a healthier lifestyle and environment. Throughout the country, chefs are showing their commitment to sustainability and nutrition by offering dishes that have been prepared with local produce, meat, seafood, grains, and dairy. Read below to learn the benefits of eating local and how you can bring the farm to your own table.

  1. Flavorful – As opposed to mass produced fruits and vegetables, local, farm grown produce is much more flavorful. Grown in rich soil and picked at the peak of their ripeness, fruits and vegetables grown locally often taste sweeter and more vibrant.
  2. Nutritious – Once produce is picked, the vitamins and minerals they contain start to break down rapidly. A vegetable’s days-long trip across country to the grocery store and finally onto your plate means a loss of essential nutrients such as potassium and vitamins amongst others.
  3. Seasonal – The availability of produce depends on the season and geographical location. Buying from farmers is a great way to keep menus and flavors fresh and varied. It’s also a great way to get creative in the kitchen and try new foods!
  4. Environmentally Friendly – Eating farm to table drastically reduces the carbon footprint left in the wake of transporting food by plane of tractor trailer. On average, 500 gallons of fuel is needed to cart produce 1500 miles! Supporting local farms also allows more green spaces and farmland to remain in communities.
  5. Economy Boosting – By purchasing locally, farms in the community are able to remain economically viable. When selling directly to the consumer, farmers retain more of their profits and are able to employ others within in the community.

Community-Supported Agriculture (CSAs) and farmer’s markets are a great way to purchase from local farms. CSAs allow members to buy a share of the farmer’s harvest before the growing season and then receive regular distributions of the bounty. Farmer’s markets are one of the oldest and most social ways to support your local farms and engage with members of your community. Check for a list of CSAs and farmer’s markets in your local area to reap all of the benefits.

What our clients are saying

“The CulinArt team has been great to work with and has been super flexible. Having worked with other dining services at different institutions, having a dining team that is open to menu changes has been a great resource for our events. ”

“I hope you do the food service in heaven.”

“Thank you for including me today in the food waste demonstration/[chef competition] and flattering me with the role of “judge.” I will proudly don the [Stop Food Waste Day] apron the next time I plan an “event” in our own kitchen. I think this is a very worthwhile cause and the statistics you read off are staggering. They, alone, can intimidate a home chef, let alone be the “driver’ for a professional one.”

“Many, and I do mean many, thanks for a great Parents Weekend.  I heard from so many happy parents and you all work very hard to make it happen.  In gratitude and kindness…”

“We appreciate the excellent service that is a hallmark of the Chadwick Culinart team. You all are such professionals - and you always deliver your service in such a pleasant manner! Thank you for everything you do to help make the Village events successful. We greatly appreciate your talents, efforts, and kindness.”

“Thank you and your staff for all the care and thought you give CSW adults and students. You approach events with such care and elegance- I don’t know how you do it! Especially day after day. Please thank all your staff for their wonderful work and kind manner with all of us. Here is to a great year!”

“The dinner I had tonight at Forman was not only the best meal I have had at Forman in the entire time I have been here, it was the best meal I can remember having anywhere in a long time. [It] was a restaurant quality meal, and it added to the enjoyment that the two young ladies serving me could not have been more charming. What an energizing way to finish a weekend eating a dinner like that.”

“Yesterday I ordered the special (Bloody Mary Burger) which was one of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted, [but] this e-mail is not to praise the burger.  Eating the burger reminded me of the great service, professionalism, the smiles, the knowledge and the great food that I have come to love each and every day.  Your team, who really work as a team, take their time to explain nutrition and meal ideas, and encourage healthy eating.  I wouldn’t change one thing about this crew. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude for their hard work each and every day.”

“What a wonderful dinner we had tonight for our international families. The food was delicious and well presented as well.”

“I just wanted to give a huge compliment to the cook at Main Street. Today I had the Salmon Super Bowl and it was amazing!!!! Every day I go in there she always has something that looks too wonderful to pass up! Thank you for always having such a variety of food!”
