Rethinking your Resolutions

It’s a new year and for many people now is the time to establish new goals and resolutions for themselves. Have you struggled to stick to your resolutions in previous years? Do you find that as the weeks pass it becomes harder and harder to stick to the “rules” and “restrictions” you’ve imposed on yourself? Typically, the resolutions people set for themselves are very specific, restrictive, and not very sustainable-lose 20 pounds, cut out ALL sugar, stop eating out. No wonder why so many people also tend to feel a bit more depressed and lethargic during the winter months of January and February! While ambitious, resolving to drastically change eating habits or lose weight can often lead to ineffective and even dangerous ways in which to achieve them.  To ensure safe and lasting results, always aim to frame your goals around the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely). Utilizing these parameters, it becomes easier to establish and maintain the steps to take towards your goals.

To ring in this new decade, rethink resolutions and instead of listing things that should be eliminated think about things that can be added into your overall lifestyle and day to day schedule that aid in achieving your goals. For example:

Instead of stating “I will cut out all sugar” a more appropriate and attainable resolution would be “I will replace my sugar-sweetened snack with fresh fruit and nuts or hummus and whole grain crackers 5 days out of the week”.  And instead of putting a quantitative number around weight, re-word your resolution to say “I will manage my weight by incorporating a 30 minute, post-lunch walk 6 days a week”.

This new year, make it your best year yet by establishing resolutions that you feel good about and can practice all year long. Choosing nourishing foods that are balanced in protein, carbohydrates, and fats while including regular physical activity will certainly make for a happy new year!

What our clients are saying

“I wanted to take this moment to thank you and your staff for making the Athletic Celebration absolutely wonderful. I cannot say enough great things about the event. The food was outstanding and the service was fantastic. Thank you for your help from start to finish.”

“Thank you and your staff for all the care and thought you give CSW adults and students. You approach events with such care and elegance- I don’t know how you do it! Especially day after day. Please thank all your staff for their wonderful work and kind manner with all of us. Here is to a great year!”

“Many, and I do mean many, thanks for a great Parents Weekend.  I heard from so many happy parents and you all work very hard to make it happen.  In gratitude and kindness…”

“I just wanted to give a huge compliment to the cook at Main Street. Today I had the Salmon Super Bowl and it was amazing!!!! Every day I go in there she always has something that looks too wonderful to pass up! Thank you for always having such a variety of food!”

“Yesterday I ordered the special (Bloody Mary Burger) which was one of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted, [but] this e-mail is not to praise the burger.  Eating the burger reminded me of the great service, professionalism, the smiles, the knowledge and the great food that I have come to love each and every day.  Your team, who really work as a team, take their time to explain nutrition and meal ideas, and encourage healthy eating.  I wouldn’t change one thing about this crew. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude for their hard work each and every day.”

“What a night! You and your team rocked it and made us look like stars. Great working with you and know we will have more chances to work together on future events.”

“Just want to take a moment to thank you for running such a great kitchen. It’s been a huge benefit to have such a delicious and various assortment of foods to choose from, all without having to leave the building. I’m always amazed at the daily variety and the quality of food that is offered. The cafeteria has made my food choices as easy as can be.”

“Even though we see challenges every day, each one of you rises to the occasion and makes it seem so easy. I cannot express how impressive it is to see you all work in such a fashion. You are true professionals.”

“What a difference a top chef makes to student satisfaction and enjoyment of campus life!  At a recent boarding school conference, food was mentioned as a key retention method and it is really true. The comforts of home are found in good food and meals enjoyed with friends. We couldn’t be more pleased with the healthy and delicious daily options presented by our chef and his team. Frank even has a suggestion box, so he is always open to new ideas and he even offers cooking classes for our students!”

“Thank you for including me today in the food waste demonstration/[chef competition] and flattering me with the role of “judge.” I will proudly don the [Stop Food Waste Day] apron the next time I plan an “event” in our own kitchen. I think this is a very worthwhile cause and the statistics you read off are staggering. They, alone, can intimidate a home chef, let alone be the “driver’ for a professional one.”
