Ways to Spice Up Basic Avocado Toast
Are you tired of the same breakfast every day and want to try something new?
Well good news! As we mentioned on the Spring Seasonal Fruit blog last week, avocados are now in season and a great addition to your breakfast meal. They are loaded with healthy fats, fibers and various nutrients that can keep you feeling full throughout the day.
Avocados can be enjoyed in many ways like in guacamole, salads, dressings, and the best one of them all, on toast! The simple way of preparing it is by mashing a ripe avocado, toasting bread, and adding spices such as salt and pepper to your desire.
If you are looking for other ways to enjoy such a filling and simple meal, here are some ideas to take your basic avocado toast to the next level.
1. Add an egg on top
Adding eggs to your avocado toast is a great way to add more protein to your meal. Eggs can be made boiled, fried, scrambled, or pouched. Top with some spices and you are good to go!
2. Spice it up
In any dish, herbs and spices play an integral role in creating flavor. Besides for your basic salt and pepper, try spices that are fresh or dried such as garlic powder, red pepper chili flakes for a nice kick, fresh parsley or cilantro, dill, zaatar seasoning, everything bagel spice, or lemon salt.
3. Add some texture
Avocados are soft in texture; topping your toast with some crunch can enhance every bite. Texture can be added with raw vegetables such as radishes, sweet peppers, scallions, red onions, tomatoes or cucumbers. You can also add some fried onions, nuts or seeds (sesame, pumpkin) for more flavor.
4. Make it cheesy
Cheese is another protein you can add to your avocado toast. Try adding feta cheese or some melted shredded mozzarella. For a vegan option, you can sprinkle some nutritional yeast for that cheesy flavor! You can even make a caprese styled avocado toast with mozzarella balls, fresh basil, and cherry tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar, yum!
5. Choose the right bread
Picking the right bread is key to making the perfect avocado toast. A bread with the correct amount of crunch and crispiness will make it or break it, literally. You will need a sturdy and medium-thick base to be able to hold all your toppings. Breads such as sour-dough, whole grain, or rye are great options to use. Also remember to toast your bread nicely brown for that irresistible bite.
6. Add some color
At this point, your toast is your canvas. More color means more flavor, especially with vegetables! Topping your toast with more green leafy vegetables such as arugula, spinach, or sprouts can add more nutrients to your dish. Pickled onions or jalapeños can also add a nice bite. Other protein options such as smoked salmon, turkey slices, and tuna are great selections as well. Vegan friendly protein options can be beans such as edamame, chickpeas, kidney beans, or even black beans.
