Ways to Spice Up Basic Avocado Toast

Are you tired of the same breakfast every day and want to try something new?

Well good news! As we mentioned on the Spring Seasonal Fruit blog last week, avocados are now in season and a great addition to your breakfast meal. They are loaded with healthy fats, fibers and various nutrients that can keep you feeling full throughout the day.

Avocados can be enjoyed in many ways like in guacamole, salads, dressings, and the best one of them all, on toast! The simple way of preparing it is by mashing a ripe avocado, toasting bread, and adding spices such as salt and pepper to your desire.

If you are looking for other ways to enjoy such a filling and simple meal, here are some ideas to take your basic avocado toast to the next level.

 1. Add an egg on top

Adding eggs to your avocado toast is a great way to add more protein to your meal. Eggs can be made boiled, fried, scrambled, or pouched. Top with some spices and you are good to go!

2. Spice it up

In any dish, herbs and spices play an integral role in creating flavor. Besides for your basic salt and pepper, try spices that are fresh or dried such as garlic powder, red pepper chili flakes for a nice kick, fresh parsley or cilantro, dill, zaatar seasoning, everything bagel spice, or lemon salt.

3. Add some texture

Avocados are soft in texture; topping your toast with some crunch can enhance every bite.  Texture can be added with raw vegetables such as radishes, sweet peppers, scallions, red onions, tomatoes or cucumbers. You can also add some fried onions, nuts or seeds (sesame, pumpkin) for more flavor.

4. Make it cheesy

Cheese is another protein you can add to your avocado toast. Try adding feta cheese or some melted shredded mozzarella. For a vegan option, you can sprinkle some nutritional yeast for that cheesy flavor! You can even make a caprese styled avocado toast with mozzarella balls, fresh basil, and cherry tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar, yum!

5. Choose the right bread

Picking the right bread is key to making the perfect avocado toast. A bread with the correct amount of crunch and crispiness will make it or break it, literally. You will need a sturdy and medium-thick base to be able to hold all your toppings. Breads such as sour-dough, whole grain, or rye are great options to use. Also remember to toast your bread nicely brown for that irresistible bite.

6. Add some color

At this point, your toast is your canvas. More color means more flavor, especially with vegetables! Topping your toast with more green leafy vegetables such as arugula, spinach, or sprouts can add more nutrients to your dish. Pickled onions or jalapenos can also add a nice bite. Other protein options such as smoked salmon, turkey slices, and tuna are great selections as well.  Vegan friendly protein options can be beans such as edamame, chickpeas, kidney beans, or even black beans.

What our clients are saying

“I will say that CulinArt has always been a very collaborative partner to T. Rowe Price, listening to our current needs and future goals and suggesting realistic and achievable strategies to meet those goals.  2020 was obviously no exception.  CulinArt also altered other areas of our OCS and pantry programs to create safer environments for all our associates. We can only thank you for your continued flexibility and innovative ideas through these difficult times.”

“I’m the GM for Branson [Ultrasonics] and based in the Brookfield office.  This is the first week that the café has been up and running in our new headquarters and just want to acknowledge the great job Adam Schnittert and the CulinArt staff onsite have done.  Our employees’ feedback thus far has been very positive.  The expanded options and menu quality have been very well received.  Just want to send you a quick note of thanks.”

“I wanted to let you know that for this entire school year I have been so well fed! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE all the diversity of salad choices we have each day and the amazing entrees.  My favorites are the carnitas, chili, curry, and cajun chicken days.  I am so grateful for all the care that goes into the food because I know I do not eat enough vegetables or balanced meals without you and your crew's work.  Thank you so much!  You take such great care of us!!”

“Thank you for including me today in the food waste demonstration/[chef competition] and flattering me with the role of “judge.” I will proudly don the [Stop Food Waste Day] apron the next time I plan an “event” in our own kitchen. I think this is a very worthwhile cause and the statistics you read off are staggering. They, alone, can intimidate a home chef, let alone be the “driver’ for a professional one.”

“This is EXACTLY the type of service and experience we had always envisioned for our patients at MSK Koch!  Thank you Chef Ryan for going out of your way for this patient and all patients and staff!”

“You know that I haven't been home (India) for a long time now.  I miss my mama, I miss the food, I miss the smells, I miss the people. Starting yesterday, I started to smell my mama's kitchen at Parker.  I KNEW something Indian was brewing; I could smell the garam masala!  Thank you for the delicious tofu curry.  It made my belly and soul happy.”

“Just came back to campus after a year of pandemic [and] just want to say that I can really tell the effort that both dining halls and all of the other locations are really putting in to make us students still feel like there is more than enough food available, good food, fresh food, healthy food. I don't think students are aware that there is such a food shortage/worker shortage and that what goes on behind the scenes must be a logistical nightmare. But I recognize it at least :) the staff was been so friendly and kind, even in the very rare occasion when something took longer than expected I could tell they were trying their absolute hardest to provide it fast and with great quality. Great job to all of them, this one student greatly appreciates the effort you all do. -Student, Stony Brook University”

“With all the prep work from Winterim ramping up and classes continuing as usual, it's a busy time to be a Forman teacher. Imagine my delight, tired as I was, when I delved into the upscale-restaurant-quality chicken parmesan our dining hall served last night. Forman is all about support, and providing our students with a dinner of that quality is just as important a measure of support as anything that happens in a classroom.”

“Thanks so much for a great week of food here at SCH to start off 2021. Everything has been fantastic. The kids were loving the Chinese food and boxes today. The Moo Shu Pork was amazing. Great work!”

“I just wanted to touch base as another school year draws to end. I cannot thank you enough for how smoothly this year went. Chef Felix [Herrera] and his staff made it seamless in a year with lots of wrinkles.    ”
